looking at the errors it put the html error message into the file,
rather than detecting the download error.

What WGET program have you got defined in my_rules_du_jour (defined
around line 66 in my case). Mine is

WGET="wget -N"

This should report an error if the URL isn't valid, rathe than just dump
the 404 error page to the file.
