OK - let's start again.

You used MailScanner's Sophos.install - right?
Installed Sophos to?
If you changed the path of Sophos from /usr/local/Sophos, did you change
  virus.scanners.conf?
Version of Sophos installed is?

All this used to work fine with 4.21 but now you can't get the ide updates?
