Julian, I'm wondering about the definition of "archive". Do most
English-speaking users understand what an "archive" is meant to be? At
least for the German version "Archiv" I doubt this is the case. Wouldn't
it be better to talk about "compressed files", "compressed archive files"
or "compressed files (archives)" or "archive (compressed file)", or so?

Taking this into account I'd translate to German:

Die Nachricht enthielt eine komprimierte Datei (Archiv), die nicht
geöffnet werden konnte.

Die Nachricht enthielt eine durch ein Paßwort geschützte, komprimierte
Datei (Archiv).
