Search for list archive -- ideas?

It's pretty generally agreed that the mailing list search facility
provided by jiscmail is not much good.
So I'm looking for alternatives.

The only obvious solution that comes to mind is to use Hypermail to
create a huge list archive, and then possibly use Google to provide the
search facility. But I don't want to break up the archive into separate
months as threads continue over month-boundaries. Alternatively I could
create my own index using some other search software.

I'm looking for recommendations and ideas for what would be best here!
