Why won't my mail forward?

netstat -l | grep smtp

should give you this....
tcp        0      0 *:smtp             *:*              LISTEN

Which means its okay, but if you get this...
tcp        0      0 localhost:smtp           *:*                 LISTEN

or something similar then its only listening on the loopback interface
