spamassassin local.cf rules

I've created some custom spamassasssin rules in /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf, and I don't think they are being used - I can't see them listed in the output from spamassassin < spam.

Am I putting them in the right place, and how do I verify that my rules are being interpreted by spamassassin ?
