The comments on MailScanner.conf say:

# As a rough guide, try 5 children per CPU. But read the notes above.

So the OP might have set 3 cores aside for the VM running it, and used 15
children.

Still, it doesn't mean "MailScanner ate my RAM", just "used most of it as
it was available", right?
