"Can't set UID 8" errors

I'm having trouble with MailScanner halting its message processing
periodically.  When this happens and the hourly check to make sure it's
still running takes place I get the following:

/etc/cron.hourly/check_MailScanner:

Starting MailScanner...Can't set UID 8 at /usr/sbin/MailScanner line
1479.
 Failed.


This was happening with version 4.76.12-1 and also with version
4.76.25-1 after I upgraded to see if that would help (it has not).
