perl clamav module - what does it do?

What does mailscanner use the perl clamav module for? I see it come up as
missing when I do a mailscanner -v but everything seems to be working
without it. I'll hazard a guess that this is specifically for the clamav
module (which I'm not using), and so it won't affect me. Anyone care to
confirm this or point out any errors in my assumption?
