Check that you aren't affected by this: http://www.znep.com/~marcs/mtu/
the symptoms of this will only be evident when a packet > PMTU is sent,
so your manual testing via telnet may not have sent enough data for this
to become apparent.
If that doesn't help, check your Exim timeouts and make sure they are
RFC compliant.
