upgrade_virus_scanners (and freshclam) worked fine once I modified both 
/usr/local/etc/clamd.conf and /usr/local/etc/freshclam.conf to modify 
the following lines:
  LogTime
  LogSyslog
to:
  LogTime true
  LogSyslog true
