You left the IRC channel just before I read your discussion about SASL 
authentication on Linux.

Redhat (and presumably anything derived from it) has 
/etc/sysconfig/saslauthd configured wrong.

They have
MECH=shadow

which is totally wrong for any decent-sized site.

What you want is
MECH=pam

then the authentication works the same way as the rest of your machine. 
This is very important for Cyrus-IMAPd.

Just thought you might need to know that.....
