We use MailScanner with sendmail in front of our exchange 2000 server and followed the
instructions here to make only valid exchange users accept mail:

http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/serve/cache/270.html

There is also an article about how to setup sendmail to forward emails to an exchange
server. It is on the site documentation.
