The BitDefender version, like any other viruscanner with mailscanner, should
be the command line version. Most of the mail-based virus scanners use some
form of direct hook into the MTA that will bypass mailscanner.
Mailscanner unpacks a batch of messages into a temp directory, then calls the
command-line scanners over that temp directory, watching the output of the
scanners, and translating that back to its own use. That is usually more
efficient than the virus scanners piping each message one at a time through
their engine.
The last free commandline version of BitDefender that was available was
BitDefender-Console-Antivirus-7.1-3.linux-gcc3x.i386.run. There is also an rpm
and a deb package.
