Just a guess - but are you running MailScanner as a non-root user e.g.
running as postfix/exim??

How about running 'su - postfix/exim' and the running 'spamassassin
-p /etc/MailScanner/spam.assassin.prefs.con -D --lint 2>&1' and see what
clues you get from that?
