Julian,
Ok.
Is there anything I need to disable to keep it from rebuilding outside of
the cron job?
And (sorry for being a noob), but what is the cron line for rebuilding
bayes?
Thanks,
Jim

No, the MailScanner-driven bayes rebuild in older versions did not lock out
the other child processes successfully. In 4.40.5 this is fixed.
What you can do is do the rebuild/expiry from a cron job at 3 in the
morning.
