My suggestion would be to remove everything that includes freshclam and
clamav in its name or directory and do a clean install. In the past, I
have gotten myself into similar messes, and this was what it took for
me to solve it.

Now I keep notes in a file in the latest src dir, so when it comes time
to update, I can refer back to how I installed the previous version and
what I should do to un-install the previous version and install the new
one.

My routine goes thusly:

Initial install:
./configure
make
make install
make clean

Upgrade:
I go to previous version src tree/dir and enter:
make uninstall

Then I go to the new version src tree/dir and start from the top
initial install. Then I create a text file and put into it notes about
anything I may of noticed during the compile, what I did to
uninstall/install everything and wait for the next major update.

Another solution would be to build it into an RPM for your system and
manage it that way. (I am exploring this option myself, but haven't had
the time to really explore it...yet!)
