OT - setting up mailertable

Just a wild guess, and the top of my head, the [1.1.1.1] means don't
lookup the MX for the record. What if you create and dns alias:

smtp-final.<domain> pointing to 1.1.1.1, 2.2.2.2, 3.3.3.3 etc
then put in mailertable xyz.com esmtp:[smtp-final.<domain>]

Maybe that works?
