Opteron Anyone?

        Julian,

I'm way behind on reading in this list, but I just ran across your
message about an Opteron.

We're using a few of them.

        1) Mail server: Dual Opteron 240 (1Gb RAM) running RedHat Fedore Core
1. it uses sendmail, mailscanner, spamassassin

        2) Desktop: AMD64 3200+ at home running Gentoo.

        3) Database Servers: two Quad Opteron 848's, 16Gb RAM, running Gentoo
with MySQL.

All three machines are running as 64-bit machines, with no problems.
The only binary that I can think of off the top of my head which is
32bit is f-prot, which still runs very nicely. tnef, with the sources
you've included, compiles fine, if I recall correctly.

root at mail (/opt/MailScanner/bin) file tnef*
tnef: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, AMD x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped
tnef.linux: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.2.5, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped
tnef.solaris: ELF 32-bit MSB executable, SPARC, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped

root at mail (/usr/local/f-prot) file f-prot
f-prot: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), for
GNU/Linux 2.2.5, statically linked, stripped

Oh, and RealPlayer on my desktop machine is 32bit, but we won't talk
about that.

I highly suggest Gentoo over RedHat. The only reason the mail server
is still using RedHat, is I've been too lazy to switch it over. We have
many users, and a good bit of mail traffic. I'm not positive that
sendmail will compile properly on it, but I'd be willing to guess that
it does. The Gentoo folks are very active.

We were up past 160,000 incoming emails per day at one point. MRTG
smooths out the peaks, so it doesn't show as well on the yearly graph.

I use 3 DNS servers, one on the same ethernet segment, and the next two
listed in /etc/resolv.conf are fairly close. They're all nice and fast,
so I don't have problems there. This server is on a nice fast
connection, so I don't run into bandwidth issues.

The only real problems I encounter are timeouts with SpamAssassin
occasionally.

I'm a few versions behind on everything, the last time I updated this
machine was a few months ago, so various things may be fixed or broken.
I've used 4.25-14, 4.29.7, and 4.30.3, with no problems.

If you have any questions, or want to try things in my production
environment, give me a shout at JWSmythe at CGICoders.com

Man, there are a million fine girls in the world,
but not all of them bring you lasagna at work.
Most of them just cheat on you.
