ClamAV autoupdate fails

Autoupdate for ClamAV fails.
When calling freshclam directly from the shell I got
the following messages:

ClamAV update process started at Mon Sep 20 16:43:50 2004
Reading CVD header (main.cvd): OK
ERROR: Can't open new file ./clamav-6b870e778763be98 to write
open: Permission denied
ERROR: Can't download main.cvd from 212.162.12.159

Any idea what could be wrong ?
