manually call spamassassin and look for errors when it tries to use the
bayesdb.  Set the path for the bayesdb in spam.assassin.prefs.conf and run

spamassassin -D --lint --prefs-file=/path/to/spam.assassin.prefs.conf >
/tmp/log 2>&1

that will redirect the debug output to /tmp/log

debug information will show which files its looking to for bayes db and if
there are any errors and will try to use bayes to score the test message.
