Querying other SMTP server for valid addresses?

Put simply, yes! Postfix uses an extension of it's address verification
system. Full details are here
http://www.postfix.org/ADDRESS_VERIFICATION_README.html all you need to
do if you don't want to do address verification on all incoming
connections (See the warning at the top of that document) is just
specify the domains you control. Postfix also has the luxury of using a
cache  after (un)successful verification, which will speed up future
look ups still further. Obviously the same caveats apply to Postfix's
version as Exim's and milter-ahead. It won't work on >Exchange 2003 or
Notes.
