Really? that seems quite shocking to me.
I've never heard any of them suggest such a thing before, and I can only
find two references to such a thing on the web. One is part of a university
mailsystem patch to libs/UMR/SpamPrefs.pm. The other is a post by someone
claiming that setting wasn't disabling the AWL (in german).
Are you sure it was one of the actual SA guys, i.e. one of the developers,
and not a general SA user who might not know what he or she is talking about?
Just based on how the AWL works, I'm quite shocked it has any effect at all.
