maillog.1 taking alot of space

Hm... this is a little offtopic, but ok, yes you can safely delete those.
Ceck your logrotate config, let it zip the files (compress) and look if
this is done daily or weekly. Sounds to me you should clean them daily.

(/etc/logrotate.conf)
