Update-MakeMaker.sh fails - what am I missing?

I've always installed on Mandrake using the install script, the only
thing I've ever needed to do different is

./install.sh nodeps

because Mandrake number their perl version differently which confuses
some of the other rpms, as their spec files are written for RedHats
versioning.
