Sorry, yes - I understand that.  My thinking was clear but my
nomenclature wasn't.  My question still stands, in that would there be
an issue (licensing or otherwise) with getting the MailScanner ebuild to
download and patch mime tools, then install it in the MailScanner lib,
so that it is used by MailScanner in preference to any other install of
MIME-Tools.

Okay, but there is an ebuild for mime-tools
(http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=dev-perl;name=MIME-tools)
although this looks like it just installs the package from CPAN.  I'm
not clear on the relationship

In principle thats a good idea, but it is effectively forking
MIME-Tools, the question that raises is that if no-one can be found to
maintain MIME-Tools who is going to maintain this patched MIME-Tools?

Great, I hadn't found that (not that I had really looked that hard, I've
only been using Gentoo about two weeks and am still finding my way
around the various resources).  Thanks for the links.
