Mailscanner-mrtg very slow

Any messages being mailed to root? Is the state.info file in /var/www/html/mailscanner-mrtg being updated  (if it can't update the file then it will need to parse the entire logs on each run).  Do a ps -elf | grep mailscanner-mrtg and see how many iterations are running (I think the default concurrency check is just to wait for the existing process to finish - it may be there is a whole queue of processes waiting to finish.  I need to check the behaviour under these circumstances)
