Chris,

I had the same problem this afternoon when I installed a new MS and
wanted to revert to the old one afterwards by putting back old
directories I had backed up before upgrading.

Turned out it tried to start the latest version (like what is happening
to you; check MS version in your log) because I forgot to copy
/usr/sbin/MailScanner before upgrading...

I believe this is where the heart of MS lives and it must match the rest
of the package that is in /usr/lib/MailScanner on my system.
