Yes theres an impact on performance in that it raises the system load
(but nothing like the impact from SpamAssassin).  I actually use four
scanners (Clam, Bitdefender, Symantec and Sophos) with SpamAssassin
(with extra rules, Razor, Pyzor, DCC)- not to mention MailScanner-MRTG
(of course) and Vispan.   I happily process 8-10 k messages per day (on
a P800, 1G Ram, IDE drive), the load gets fairly high and the CPU is
pretty much tied up during the day but we don't get any noticible
delays.
