I've tried that and MailScanner fails to restart, but no errors are
generated in any of the logs or by the /etc/init.d/mailscanner script.

We are using MailScanner 4.30.3-2 from the Debian Testing branch (it's only
3.13.2-4 in stable!). I'm reluctant to upgrade to V4.31.6-1 and patch that
as it is in the Debian Unstable branch, unless anyone can tell me it's
stable enough for production use? Failing that, any other ideas?
