bayes auto expire

In my spam.assassin.prefs.conf I have
bayes_auto_expire 0

and in MailScanner.conf I have
Rebuild Bayes Every = 86400
Wait During Bayes Rebuild = yes

The maillog shows that MailScanner is successully rebuilding the bayes database
daily.  Nevertheless, yesterday I started seeing SA timeouts and noticed that there
were a few bayes_toks.expirexxx files building up.  Does this mean that SA is still
trying to rebuild the database in spite of my settings?

BTW, increasing my SA timeoute from 45 sec to 60 sec and reloading MailScanner
seems to have fixed the problem immediately.  I haven't seen a timeout since.  I'm
not sure which of those 2 things did it.
