We recently upgraded our Mailscanner to 4.36.4 Suddenly, we were losing
a lot of messages with a "Could not analyze message" errors. Also, doing
a ps -ef, there was the original Mailscanner job and its spawned
children but a lot of additional Mailscanner jobs (at one point reaching
over 790) with parent process IDs of 1.

We lost a lot of emails. They got thrown into quarantine but without
headers so I am now working on getting them out to the correct people.

Currently, I am running mailscanner in foreground and debug modes using
the watch command. This seems to work fine and we haven't lost any
messages. However, we are still getting errors like

Could not get to parent of incoming work directory at
/usr/share/MailScanner/MailScanner/WorkArea.pm line 187.
and
  Can't unlink file
/var/spool/MailScanner/incoming/5243/1CfKnq-0000m6-DL/msg-5243-39.html:
No such file or directory at
  /usr/share/MailScanner/MailScanner/WorkArea.pm line 193
  Can't remove directory
/var/spool/MailScanner/incoming/5243/1CfKp8-0000zU-Ny: No such file or
directory at
  /usr/share/MailScanner/MailScanner/WorkArea.pm line 193
and can't restore permissions to 0700
  at /usr/share/MailScanner/MailScanner/WorkArea.pm line 193

We have a dual CPU system and are running Debian and Exim.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

Rich
