ok so you're running metadevices on / /usr and /var.

How is disksuite (or whatever they call it now) configured for the three
meta devices and the underlying physical disks?

I guess your logs are landing on /var/log which could be an issue..you
might get more out of /var if you run journalling on it (assuming you're
not). From memory there's a flag on the mount options to turn on
journalling.
