Having now stopped ranting I'm going to try a constructive contribution...
One company we deal with does this (I think by using the stationary feature of Outlook). These emails look fine (i.e. readable once you get past the pointless gif) on Outlook, but when I access them from Evolution the image is rendered as a tiled background - you can imagine the readability of the message then. Worth considering whether this might in fact present a less than professional appearance.
