He meant, did you either close your terminal window (if working in X) or
logout and log back in - so that your environment reflects the changes
that you made.

Did you run the spamassassin -D --lint  test I suggested?

In what way does MailScanner 'crash'?  Do the processes die?  Is there
anything in the maillog?
