Look at what a ps shows:

bash-2.03# ps -efa | grep 5277
    root 5295 4689 0 17:04:30 pts/0 0:00 grep 5277
    root 5277 1 0 17:04:13 ? 0:00 /usr/bin/perl -I/opt/MailScanner/lib /opt/MailScanner/bin/MailScanner /opt/Mail
    root 5289 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
    root 5278 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>

Some minutes later:

bash-2.03# ps -efa | grep 5277
    root 5436 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
    root 5313 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
    root 5297 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
    root 5441 4689 0 17:08:07 pts/0 0:00 grep 5277
    root 5277 1 0 17:04:13 ? 0:00 /usr/bin/perl -I/opt/MailScanner/lib /opt/MailScanner/bin/MailScanner /opt/Mail
    root 5289 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
    root 5278 5277 0 0:00 <defunct>
