Why won't my mail forward?

That something connected, and disconnected without issuing any of
the MAIL, EXPN, VRFY, or ETRN commands.

That, coupled with my (too vague, darn it!) memories of problems with
a firewall that responded like that, make me wonder if the hardware or
firmware is getting in the way.
