Testing MailScanner

So what processes are running? On my long-established RedHat 7.2
machine, here's what I get:

[root at verbose root]# ps auxw | grep sendmail
smmsp 28733 0.0 0.0 5188 324 ? S Aug16 0:00 sendmail:
Queue runner at 00:15:00 for /var/spool/clientmqueue
root 28734 0.0 0.0 5284 324 ? S Aug16 0:00 sendmail:
Queue runner at 00:05:00 for /var/spool/mqueue
root 28737 0.0 0.1 5376 608 ? S Aug16 3:05 sendmail:
accepting connections
root 11042 0.0 0.1 3572 536 pts/0 S 08:57 0:00 grep
sendmail

You'll see exactly three actual sendmail processes. One is the standard
Queue runner for /var/spool/mqueue, which MailScanner has always
handled. One is the optional Queue runner for /var/spool/clientmqueue.
I'm not entirely sure when this is needed, but Julian told me how to
manually start it some months back, and now it's included in MailScanner
by default. One is the process to accept incoming mail.

I can't tell you how to get the same results in RedHat 9, because ps
doesn't seem to work the same way. There I just get this:

[root at vanquish MailScanner]# ps auxw | grep sendmail
root 3637 0.0 0.4 5924 1188 ? S Aug26 0:00
[sendmail]
smmsp 3642 0.0 0.3 5712 968 ? S Aug26 0:00
[sendmail]
root 3648 0.0 0.3 5808 972 ? S Aug26 0:00
[sendmail]
root 6697 0.0 0.0 1476 236 pts/0 R 09:05 0:00 grep
sendmail

I suspect that I have the same three sendmail processes running, but I
can't tell for sure. I note that in both cases, two are owned by root
and one my smmsp.

MailScanner 4 has been *much* less problem for me than 3 was. In your
shoes, I might unplug the server, delete every trace of MailScanner I
could find and install the latest stable version, but I sure wouldn't go
back to anything older than that.
