If they're 1k - 2k emails, can you check one of them thoroughly to see if
they're actually MIME encoded, with a text/plain section which is empty?
I sometimes see Spam come in like this. I use a text-only mail client - I
don't want to see HTML in emails, and some Spam is MIME encoded with a
text/plain section, and a text/html section, but the plain part is empty.
Just wondering if this might be what you're seeing (although I'm not sure why
you get the duplication).

Never write it in Perl if you can do it in Awk.

Never use sed when tr can do the job.
Never invoke tr when cat is sufficient.
Avoid using cat whenever possible.
