spam marked properly but not deleted

I've a feeling there's an occasional bug in the spam actions in V3 that I
never managed to track down completely (I could never reproduce the problem
myself). I completely rewrote all this code in V4, so the problem shouldn't
be there any more. It's a V3 problem that I'm not planning to fix.
