Sounds a bit as though you might have users running their mail clients
(pine or elm perhaps?) on the MailScanner server itself. If you have people
directly running the email client on the mail server, make sure it is
configured to talk SMTP to the server, not directly invoke the sendmail binary.

However, you also say that messages from MailScanner itself are just
sitting in the queue not going anywhere. Are you running MailScanner in
"queue" mode? Otherwise it should attempt delivery of messages as soon as
it places them in the outgoing (/var/spool/mqueue) directory.
