It sounds similar to the problem I'm having with sendmail cooking large
alias db files (i.e. "newaliases"). Takes 1.5 seconds on RH 9, but
takes 30 seconds or more on Fedora and RHEL. The problem is in libdb.a
(BerkeleyDB) library. RH9 uses 4.0 while Fedora and RHEL use 4.1,
which has a major performance bug (which I've been unable to isolate).
I notice this when restarting MailScanner because it restarts sendmail
and also runs "newaliases" in the startup script.

I know this is different than your Sophos issue, but I wonder if Sophos
uses BerkeleyDB for anything, or if there is some similar issue
affecting both pieces of software.
Has anyone quizzed Sophos on this?

In my case it's:
#time /opt/MailScanner/lib/sophos-wrapper /usr/local/Sophos/ -v
But it depends on the location of your sophos-wrapper and your Sophos
directory.
Incidentaly, I'm getting:

on a RHEL box running at 2.8Ghz.
