Create a rule set for Spam Actions

The rule set should contain something like

upgrade, while I am testing I might as well test the new systemd

It hasn't been packaged yet, but you can download or clone the
repository at <https://github.com/MailScanner/v5> and run the Build.rhel
script to build the RPM.

I'm running MailScanner on a CentOS 7 server that runs WHM/cPanel.

Recently, I noticed that the rules sets at /usr/mailscanner/etc/rules 
periodically revert to some earlier settings I had set in some of the files.

The most recent change occurred at 2017-07-02 00:00:05 ... and I don't 
know why.

At that time, the following files were touched:

spam.action.rules
spam.blacklist.rules
spam.scanning.rules
spam.score.rules
spam.whitelist.rules
spamhigh.action.rules
spamhigh.score.rules
virus.delivery.rules
virus.scanning.rules

The other rules in the folder were not touched.

I can't find any cron job that might explain it.

Is there something in MailScanner that might account for this?

Unlikely. The only one of those files that's even in the MailScanner
distribution is spam.whitelist.rules.

Have you looked in your syslog and perhaps other logs to see what was
running at 00:00 on July 2?

If you are using our cPanel MailScanner Front-End, there is a back-end 
script (/usr/mscpanel/mscpanel.pl) that runs nightly to update the rules 
files based on the settings in the WHM and cPanel front-ends. In general 
if you're using our cPanel MailScanner Front-End you shouldn't modify 
the rules files manually but do it via the front-end. If you need 
further assistance with the front-end feel free to submit a ticket on 
our helpdesk (https://support.configserver.com/) or post on our 
community forums (http://forum.configserver.com/)

Yes, I do indeed use the cPanel MailScanner Front-End.

However, I don't see where to use it to edit the rules.

I see View Ruleset, but that doesn't allow modifications.

I also see MailScanner Rules Update.

But that's all I see.

What am I overlooking?

Check out the forums for eFa.  There are a few unofficial scripts there
that some folks have contributed.

User management is a function of MailWatch, not MailScanner.

You don't actually edit the rules files via the front-end. Where to find 
it in the front-end depends on exactly what you want to do. Since this 
is not actually a MailScanner issue or question it seems better to take

I upgraded my MailScanner installation and decided to nuke all old config 
files to remove stale stuff

I found a much cleaned up version of spam.lists.conf which is good but 
have some question on the format. The default MailScanner.conf says :
Spam List = spamhaus-ZEN # You can un-comment this to enable them

But the spam.lists.conf says :
# http://barracudacentral.org/rbl
BARRACUDA                       b.barracudacentral.org

# aggregate list - http://www.sorbs.net/using.shtml
SORBS                           dnsbl.sorbs.net

# aggregate list - http://www.spamhaus.org/zen/

My old and trusty spam.lists.conf had :
spamhaus-ZEN                    zen.spamhaus.org.


Am i right that MailScanner.conf should contain :
Spam List = BARRACUDA SORBS SPAMHAUS SPAMCOP

but not spamhaus-ZEN ?



(If yes, maybe something to fix in the repository?)

I also noticed that cbl.abuseat.org is no longer there, these guys are 
still going strong (i use cbl.abuseat.org as a blocklist even in my

OK, this is a total n00b question but previous versions of MailScanner 
would start sendmail for me.   Now it seems that sendmail is split and 
must be started as a separate service.

I did a completely new install but it looks like sendmail is now 
immediately delivering mail from my linux box -> exchange box (because of 
mailertable), MailScanner is not getting/scanning any email at all.

How do I get MailScanner in the loop?

I checked the info under MTA on www.mailscanner.info but the info 
looks pretty old and the CentOS6 command to invoke sendmail looks 
completely different from what is on the website ?

(I checked an existing MailScanner installation grepping mqueue.in on /etc 
but no hits at all)

Another small bug (or feauture?) ;)

I put all of my settings in /etc/MailScanner/conf.d/my_settings.conf
as recommended in MailScanner.conf

But MailScanner doesn't take the value at %org-name% = from my settings 
file, it only takes it from /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf

And another thing I noticed is that after a half a day ps -A | grep ail 
shows mere that there are many more mailscanner processes running than 
the 5 i set in MailScanner.conf

Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC being installed and visible in
MailScanner -v

When running spamassassin -D --lint i would see it
getting scores but there is no mention of DCC anywhere. I tried enabling 
it but that only resulted in spamassassin warnings

The tarball installer still mentions it but no trace of an (attempted)
install on my system.

So, what warnings did spamassassin give you? DCC is not a MailScanner thing.
It is a spamassassin thing. Did you look at
/etc/MailScanner/spamassassin.conf and uncomment the DCC lines after you
have verified the Perl module is installed?

Sorry, you are right.  I totally forgot :
To make SpamAssassin use DCC, uncomment the following line in the 
v310.pre file so the plugin gets loaded:

So, what warnings did spamassassin give you? DCC is not a MailScanner thing.
It is a spamassassin thing. Did you look at /etc/MailScanner/spamassassin.conf and uncomment the DCC lines after you have verified the Perl module is installed?

What happened to DCC ?  Back in the old days I would see Mail::SpamAssassin::Plugin::DCC being installed and visible in MailScanner -v

When running spamassassin -D --lint i would see it getting scores but there is no mention of DCC anywhere. I tried enabling it but that only resulted in spamassassin warnings

The tarball installer still mentions it but no trace of an (attempted) install on my system.

I recently switched development environments and have yet to spin up the servers to build the DEB and RPM packages. If anyone has is already setup to build out some release packages (i.e. Shawn), I will happily post those for download on the MailScanner website. Just make sure you give me a chance to update build versions in GitHub. I would also need a changelog.

I've tried to install MailScanner on a new FreeBSD box. I received an interesting error -

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mailscanner start
/usr/local/etc/rc.d/mailscanner: WARNING: run_rc_command: cannot run /usr/local/sbin/mailscanner

I can see /usr/local/sbin/mailscanner does not exist, but /usr/local/sbin/MailScanner does.

cat /usr/local/etc/rc.d/mailscanner | grep command
command="/usr/local/sbin/mailscanner"
command_args="${required_files}"
extra_commands=reload
run_rc_command "$1"

I have contacted the port owner for this issue.

I've changed this now, but I've come up with another error when I attempt to start the program -

Starting mailscanner.

This is probably not the answer you're looking for, but we have been a 
Red Hat and later Centos house for over 20 years.

We started a mass migration to Ubuntu 1604 LTS earlier this year and 
have to say we would never go back to Centos or RedHat now.

It is completely backward and version limited compared to Ubuntu, and 
the Yum/RPM configuration is simply archaic compared to "apt".

The management of SystemD and backwards compatibility with system V 
scripts on Centos7/Redhat 7 is botched at best.

My only regret is that we didn't dump Redhat/centos earlier.

You also need to consider that RedHat bought out all the Centos core 
developers and its owned/funded by RedHat now so there is a commercial 
incentive to make it an inferior product now to entice people to move to 
RHEL.  There is also no upgrade path on Centos or RedHat between major 
version revisions so you have to re-install which is a massive 
"ball-ache" to say the least.  This is done because RedHat market and 
sell their support based on Major revisions and allowing an upgrade 
mechanism between say Centos 6 and Centos 7 would scupper that revenue 
stream.

And the final point, RedHat just feels a bit basic, primitive and 
rubbish after using Ubuntu.

So take the plunge, yo won't regret it!
