Signature Variables Not Working

I have this in my inline.sig.html file:

<br />date:
<br />$date
<br />to:
<br />$to
<br />from:
<br />$from
<br />subject:
<br />$subject
<br />hostname:
<br />$hostname

And this is what ends up on the email:

date:
to:
from:
email at domain.com
subject:
SUBJECT LINE
hostname:

There should be a returned answer on the next line after every line that ends in a :

$subject and $to are the only 2 in this example that seem to work.

Any ideas?
