It seems to work for me:

root at sbh16:~# service MailScanner status
 * MailScanner is running
root at sbh16:~# service MailScanner stop
 * Stopping email processor -  MailScanner
 [ OK ]
root at sbh16:~# service MailScanner status
 * MailScanner is not running
root at sbh16:~# service MailScanner start
 * Starting email processor -  MailScanner



 [ OK ]
root at sbh16:~#
