MS renames xlsx as xls in quarantine?

I would advise doing some basic sanity checks on your setup. There is 
nothing in MailScanner that can possibly do this, unless you are running 
the latest beta releases which can quietly rename attachments to 
"disarm" them while still allowing them to reach the recipient.

Never seen this one before, something strange is happening in your setup.
