dont use xvd block devices? why not? what is the alternative? or have I 
misunderstood?

I use Xen for build, test and package environments and use xvd block 
devices on top of Logical Volumes exported from Dom0. Seems to give 
pretty good performance (but no figures to back that up). Can you elaborate?
