PROBLEM

Can you give a bit more information about your setup.
Do you have mailscanner sitting infront of your mail server?
Are you using recipient verification so you reject mail to unknown
users?
If not then you will end up accepting the mail and then try to send out
non delivery messages which could result in the problem you are seeing.
