MailScanner fails after 'up2date -u' done

After doing an 'up2date -u' on a RH AS4 system MailScanner failed to start.

Running in debug mode I get:

         outgoing sendmail:                                [  OK  ]
         MailScanner:        is only avaliable with the XS version at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.5/Compress/Zlib.pm line 9

I am investigating but any pointers as to the likely cause would be welcome. Am running MailScanner-4.65.3-1.
