Check the output of "dmesg" for scsi sense errors or anything that looks 
like a failing disk.

An unreasonably high percentage of drives die shortly after you start to 
utilise them. If it's a hitachi 80GB deathstar then you can probably say 
for certain it's gone.

Raid 1 in software raid can sometimes cause this issue, check to see 
that you can write to all partitions using "touch /usr" etc

A reboot would probably fix it temporarily.
